Net Merit $ is the U.S. national economic index, designed to maximize a cow’s lifetime profitability. It ranks dairy animals based on their combined genetic merit for economically important traits. The guiding principle in the Net Merit construction is that index weights are based on an economic model that considers, as accurately as possible, incomes and expenses over the life of a dairy cow. Net Merit is a profit-driven selection tool based purely on economic value and trait reliability.
The U.S. dairy industry has evolved significantly since the last Net Merit update in 2021. While some trait weight shifts occurred in the 2025 revision, they were mainly within correlated groups, meaning the overall balance remains stable with previous versions.
